COMPANY HISTORY

Canadian Special Service completed their first well for POCO on November 13, 1991, in the Three Hills, Alberta area.

The company started as a two man partnership with the idea of building a snubbing company that focused on treating our people better, providing a better safety program, better training, better equipment, respect as individuals, more time off and a management team with an open mind that is willing to listen to the man in the field.

The two men that designed and operated our first snubbing unit were:
  • Gilles Jeaurond - a former well control specialist for Otis Engineering's North American Blow Out Recovery Team (1978 -1983).

  • Jim Rice - Canadian Hydraulic Work-Overs (1980-1983), Cactus Drilling (1983-1990).
This partnership was then known as "High Tech-Well Control". The company brought innovation and a wealth of knowledge to the rig assist snubbing market.

Through a corporate merger, they continued business as "Target Snubbing" and came out of the blocks swinging, with the industry's first "Stand Up" rig assist snubbing unit, reducing rig up times to 20 minutes.

To complement this new technology, they re-acquainted the snubbing industry to the "Hanger Flange" and the "RS 100 - Stripping Head" in 1994. Very useful tools, they were first introduced to the Canadian market by Otis Engineering.

They improved the RS 100 by adding a snub plate adaptor, consisting of a cable and pulley system and used it to complete over 2,000 shallow, low pressure gas wells. This was the first version of their current Drilling Head.

They also introduced this Drilling Head to the under-balanced drilling market, successfully completing the Gulf, Midwinter Project in July Lake, N.E. British Columbia in 1995. From there, they dominated under-balanced drilling with this Drilling Head, successfully completing several UBD projects over the next decade for a number of Companies, including Penn West, AEC, Pan-Canadian, and Encana.

During this time they kept with their tradition of forward thinking and successfully developed a urethane packing element for their Drilling Head. This greatly improved the durability and life cycle over the traditional natural rubber packing element. It was also during this period that they introduced an inverted slip package that threaded directly into the Drilling Head Body, replacing the conventional cap with a "quick change", ready to go snubbing assembly.

1997 saw the original partnership that made Target Snubbing dissolve and they emerged as Canadian Special Services Ltd.

In 2006, Canadian Special Services Ltd. introduced to the industry another first. The 200k "Free Standing" Snubbing Unit that has the same foot print of most conventional 120k rig-less units.

Together with their Well Head Stabilization Unit, this package combines all of our customer requirements. Big rig performance, deep hole/large tubing capability, with small rig mobility, no anchors and no extra trucking required.

Safe, Cost Effective and Environmentally Friendly!!

In 2006, Canadian Special Services Ltd. were among the first within the industry to receive Enform Sponsorship in the Snubbing Services Assessor Program, and now have 3 industry approved Assessors working within their Management System.

The Assessors will continue to monitor their Safety Program, the ability and capability of our field staff, our systems management, and training programs.

Through it all, we have been a rarity within the industry - a Snubbing Company,
wholly owned, operated and managed by snubbing personnel.
